Australia’s opening batsman Matthew Hayden has drawn the curtain on his outstanding international cricket career after 15 years. Hayden, 37, who played 103 Tests and 161 one day internationals, will leave the game as arguably Australia's greatest opener with a record of 8624 runs at 50.74. Hayden scored thirty centuries and 29 half centuries, with a highest score of a then world record 380 against Zimbabwe in Perth in October 2003.

 

His individual accolades included being named Test Player of the Year, Wisden Cricketer of the Year, International Cricket Council One-Day Player of the Year and One-Day International Player of the Year. The left-handed Queenslander was the first batsman to snare more than 1000 runs in five successive calendar years – 2001-2005. Hayden accumulated 6,133 runs in the 50 overs a side international matches, with an average of 43.80 and a strike rate of 78.96. Among his most memorable knocks was an unbeaten Australian record 181 off 166 balls – which included 10 sixes – in the final match of the 2006-07 Chappell-Hadlee series.
