Requiring a win to advance to the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament, Australia were in deep in trouble. Set a hefty total of 272 for victory by the Proteas, the Aussies had lost Adam Gilchrist, Mark Waugh and Damien Martyn cheaply, slumping to 3/48 before their captain strode out in the 12th over to join Ricky Ponting in the middle.
