On Saturday, August 24, 1963 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, a record crowd of 69 860 witnessed St. George and Western suburbs do battle in that year's Grand Final. The match was played in atrocious conditions after heavy overnight rain had turned the ground into a quagmire. As the players left the field, the rain stopped briefly and streams of sunlight illuminated the ground - bathing opposing captains Norm Provan and Arthur Summons in golden light. At the same moment Sun-Herald photographer, John O'Gready, snapped a shot - capturing the two rivals forever, locked in eternal embrace.

 

The photograph, which won the prestigious British Press Photographers Award, is widely regarded as the most enduring and evocative image in Australian sporting history.
