Cahill's name will be forever etched in Australian football folklore, as the first Australian to score at a World Cup, when he drove home the equaliser against Japan in the opening group match of Germany 2006. After Japan led 1-0 for the majority of the game, Cahill scored Australia's first ever World Cup goal to bring Australia level in the 84th minute. Moments later, Cahill curled in a second goal from outside the box in the 89th minute to put the Socceroos in the lead.
